  5. Hello everybody! I wrote a personal review about "Alcina" and my Zürich-Trip from last sunday and posted it into the "Review-Section". I will write something in english as well, but first the german text! Enjoy! Koile

  6. Thanks Koile, very good reviwe, it must have been a fantastic performance and lucky you to enjoy this pearl. I always get in a good mode wen I read a positive comment about Cecilia, because I think she is worth it. She's such a great performer, not only a fantastic singer, but also actress. She is a great artist.

  7. I was there in Zürich , the performance was beautiful but honestly I'd have prefered the divine Cecilia as Ruggiero, the role has much more room for virtuosity and also for slow pathetic singing, Alcina is more unidimensional, of course this is only my humble opinion. ¿does anyone know if Cecilia has plans to return to the castrati repertoire? to me her Sacrificium is her best album, I dislike that countertenors are displacing ladies from this repertoire. thanks for this forum.

    1. I would have loved to have a real good counter at her side as Ruggiero, but was very happy with Malena Ernman, too. I love to hear counters in the castrati roles, cause they get closer to the originally intended notion. Ernman made a very good man , though -:).
Cecilia doesn't sing pant-roles on stage anymore, so we can only hope for some recorded Ruggiero arias from her.

    2. Yes, Ruggiero is an interesting character and surely Cecilia'd make a great job in singing his arias. But so did Malena, in my opinion, I very much like her joy of acting, especially during act 2 and 3, her 'Sta nell'incarna' was so cool! 'Verdi prati' was very touching to me. I wouldn't want to miss her Ruggiero. And neither Cecilia's Alcina, of course. :)

    3. I have to say, I don´t see Cecilia in pant-roles. It is not the question, if she can sing it or not, but I find her not that convincing as being a man. The tricky thing with pant-roles is, that if you don´t nail it (like Malena did) it can be kind of ridiculous. Ernman has the figure like a man and Cecilia is a really beautiful woman, who looks ab fab in a dress:-)

    4. Esther. I couldn't agree more. Sacrificium is also my favorite.

  8. Two things: Didymus said Cecilia doesn't sing pant roles on stage anymore. Is that a fact? How do you know and why?
Also: she has never been so comfortable in pant roles obviously, she hasn't sung many, she did not sing the part of Rinaldo in that opera recording (and we will always miss knowing what her CARA SPOSA would have been) but instead the part of Almirena, which to me was interesting because she passed on a wonderful part which is very difficult for a counter tenor because I feel they miss the force that is needed. And she has the force and the tenderness dor that part.
It will also mean that she will never sing ARIODANTE on stage, she didn't even record any of these arias and to me that is really terrible. She has been singing the arias many times BUT NEVER RECORDED.
If there is one thing I don't really understand about her and her choices is that she has not recorded and PUBLISHED a Händel album. She really should have done that, regardless of what other singers do, I think here she was ill advised.

  9. Ah. So you think she sings things because she was advised to. Curious. Such an idea would never have occurred to me. I saw her Genio from Haydn in Zurich, but that's the last pants part I remember. Her friend Donna Leon will certainly be pushing for a Handel arias album, so don't give up yet.

    1. I don't think she sings things because she is advised too, but I remember when there was talk about a castrati recording and just then came out the farinelli cd with Viveca Genaux and Rene jacobs and the cd was cancelled.
It's some years ago and i don't remember the details. Much later sacrificium came but even on it apparently an aria was dropped because Simone Kermes recorded it some months before as far as i know.
I do believe the reason she hasn't yet published a Händel recording is because there have been so many by so many singers and she'd rather explore something not well known.
But to be honest the Salieri and the Gluck recordings weren't that great in my opinion because Salieri isn't the genius the tried to make him and the Gluck arias aren't among his best work.
So I think it's a pity to have that and no Händel recording because I believe she is the finest Händel singer of our time and the re-discovery of Händel the greatest achievment in classical recordings of the last 20 years.
by the way my favourite of her recordings is Opera proibita which I feel is strangely underrated.
I think she was in outstanding form vocally and artistically it's a very touching.
When I saw her in concert with that programm I felt 'columns of sound' coming towards me in 'Venne pentita...'

    2. I have to partly agree with Rain: Opera Proibita is, in my opinion, Cecilia's best baroque album. I would disagree however in what Rain has said about the Salieri disc: the album is very nice, full of humour, and is one of the few albums released by Cecilia in the past 15 years which make you feel as if you were listening to a real concert recording, and not to a studio one.

I'm sure that it can be only Cecilia's own idea what to sing now or then, but of course there is something left to producers' and her own considerations about what should be recorded (or, in view of rumours about «archived» recording sessions, better to say released) or not, for marketing reasons.

  10. I absolutely agree that Cecilia should record a Händel album. Let's make a wishlist, what Händel arias have to be on that album?

    1. I'd love Cecilia singing Handel arias, my list would be:

      Ste nell Ircana from Alcina

      Scherza infinida from Ariodante

Quella fiamma nel petto from Arminio

      Cara speme from Giulio cesare

      L'ingrato non amar from Radamisto

Destero dal empia dite from Amadigo

      Verdi Prati from Alcina

Sento brillar from Il Pastor fido

      what do you think? ;-)

  11. I have been sorry for a long time that there is no Giulio album with Cecilia.

  12. Her rendition of Alcina's "Si, son quella" was overwhelming in Zurich.
Does anyone know if this production will be revived in Salzburg, Zurich, Vienna or Paris ?

  13. Yes, that was beautiful. I'd love to have 'Scherza infida' recorded - the YouTube Video from Amsterdam is wonderful but poor quality, of course.
